5.4 Common Antennas

In amateur radio, various types of antennas are used depending on the communication needs, frequency, and installation constraints. Understanding the characteristics and uses of different antennas helps operators choose the right antenna for their setup.

Half-Wave Dipole Antenna:

• Description: A half-wave dipole antenna consists of two equal-length conductive elements, each approximately one-quarter of the wavelength of the operating frequency. The total length of the antenna is thus half the wavelength.
• Uses: It is widely used due to its simplicity and effectiveness, especially for HF (High Frequency) bands.
• Characteristics: It provides a bidirectional radiation pattern, making it suitable for contacts in opposite directions.

Folded Dipole Antenna:

• Description: A folded dipole antenna is similar to a half-wave dipole but with an additional conductor connected at both ends, creating a continuous loop. This effectively increases the antenna’s impedance.
• Uses: It is often used for TV and FM reception and offers a wider bandwidth than a standard dipole.
• Characteristics: It has a broader frequency response and can handle higher power levels.

Quarter-Wave Vertical Ground Plane Antenna:

• Description: This antenna consists of a vertical element that is one-quarter of the wavelength long, with ground radials extending horizontally from the base.
• Uses: Commonly used for VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) communications, especially in mobile and base station applications.
• Characteristics: It provides an omnidirectional radiation pattern, radiating equally in all horizontal directions.

Yagi-Uda Antenna:

• Description: The Yagi-Uda antenna, or simply Yagi, consists of a driven element (similar to a dipole), one reflector element, and one or more director elements. The elements are arranged in a line.
• Uses: Widely used for its high gain and directional properties, making it ideal for long-distance communications and TV reception.
• Characteristics: It has a highly directional radiation pattern, providing gain in a specific direction and reducing interference from unwanted directions.

End-Fed Half-Wave Antenna:

• Description: An end-fed half-wave antenna is similar to a dipole but is fed at one end rather than the centre. It typically requires a matching network to match the high impedance at the feed point.
• Uses: Useful for portable operations and limited space installations where a full dipole cannot be erected.
• Characteristics: It is easy to deploy and can provide good performance with a simple setup.
