7.2 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of electronic and electrical equipment to function correctly in their electromagnetic environment without causing or suffering from unacceptable interference. EMC is crucial for ensuring that various devices and systems can operate simultaneously without disrupting each other’s performance.

Key Aspects of EMC:

1. Emissions: The electromagnetic energy produced by a device. Equipment should emit minimal electromagnetic interference (EMI) to avoid affecting other devices.
2. Immunity: The ability of a device to resist electromagnetic interference from external sources. High immunity ensures that a device can operate correctly even in the presence of EMI.
3. Susceptibility: The tendency of a device to be affected by external electromagnetic fields. Low susceptibility is desirable to maintain reliable operation.

Mitigating EMC Issues:

Using Filters:

• RF Filters: Install radio frequency filters on power and signal lines to block unwanted frequencies that can cause interference. Low-pass filters, high-pass filters, and band-pass filters are common types used to manage EMC.
• Line Filters: Power line filters reduce the electromagnetic noise conducted through power cables, improving the EMC performance of connected devices.

Proper Antenna Placement:

• Separation from Noise Sources: Place antennas away from potential sources of EMI, such as high-voltage power lines, industrial machinery, and electronic equipment. This helps reduce the pickup of unwanted signals.
• Height and Orientation: Elevate antennas and orient them correctly to minimise interference from surrounding structures and other electronic devices. Proper placement enhances signal clarity and reduces EMI impact.

Shielding and Grounding:

• Shielding: Enclose electronic devices in shielding materials to prevent EMI from radiating out or entering the equipment. Shielded cables can also be used to protect signal integrity.
• Grounding: Proper grounding of equipment and antennas helps dissipate unwanted electromagnetic energy, reducing the potential for interference. Ensure all components are correctly grounded to a common earth point.

Cable Management:

• Twisted Pair Cables: Use twisted pair cables for signal transmission to cancel out electromagnetic noise. The twisting helps negate interference picked up along the cable length.
• Cable Routing: Route cables away from potential EMI sources and avoid running power and signal cables parallel to each other. Cross them at right angles if necessary to reduce interference.

Regular Maintenance and Testing:

• Inspect and Test Equipment: Regularly check equipment for proper operation and EMI emission levels. Use EMC testing tools to identify and address potential issues.
• Replace Faulty Components: Replace worn or defective components that could contribute to increased emissions or reduced immunity.
