High voltages and currents pose significant dangers, including the risk of electric shock, burns, and even fatal injury. It is imperative for amateur radio operators to understand and adhere to safety protocols when working with electrical equipment.

Approved Equipment: Always use equipment that has been approved by relevant authorities, such as the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) or other recognised electrical safety bodies. Approved equipment meets strict safety standards, reducing the risk of malfunction or hazards.

Safety Measures:

1. Insulation and Enclosures: Ensure all electrical equipment is properly insulated and enclosed to prevent accidental contact with live components. Insulation materials should be in good condition, without any cracks or damage.
2. Earth Connections: Proper earthing is essential to provide a safe path for any fault currents, preventing electric shock. All mains-operated equipment should have a safety earth connection to protect users from electrical faults.
3. Fuses and Circuit Breakers: Use the correct fuses and circuit breakers as specified by the equipment manufacturer. Fuses and circuit breakers protect against overcurrents that can cause overheating, fire, or equipment damage. Replace blown fuses with ones of the same rating to ensure continued protection.
4. Qualified Personnel: Only qualified and authorised personnel should carry out wiring and testing of mains-operated equipment. This includes tasks such as replacing power leads, installing new sockets, or repairing damaged equipment.

7. Emergency Procedures: Be prepared to act swiftly in the event of an electrical accident. Know the location of the main power switch and how to cut off power quickly. In the case of electric shock, do not touch the victim until the power is off. Call emergency services immediately and be ready to administer CPR if needed.
