6.4 Obstacles

VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) signals are primarily propagated via line-of-sight, which means they travel in straight lines from the transmitter to the receiver. However, various obstacles can impede these signals, affecting their range and quality.

Physical Obstacles:

• Hills and Mountains: Large natural formations like hills and mountains can block VHF and UHF signals, preventing them from reaching the receiver. The signal can sometimes diffract around these obstacles, but this often results in weaker and less reliable communication.
• Buildings and Urban Structures: In urban environments, tall buildings and other structures can reflect, absorb, or scatter radio waves. This can create multipath interference, where the signal takes multiple paths to reach the receiver, causing phase differences and signal degradation.
• Trees and Vegetation: Dense foliage and tree canopies can also attenuate VHF and UHF signals, especially when wet. The leaves and branches absorb and scatter the radio waves, reducing signal strength.

Atmospheric Conditions:

• Temperature Inversions: Under certain atmospheric conditions, such as temperature inversions, radio waves can be refracted, allowing them to travel beyond the normal line-of-sight horizon. This can temporarily extend the range of VHF and UHF signals.
  • Temperature Inversion: Occurs when a layer of warm air traps a layer of cooler air near the ground, bending the radio waves and extending their range.
• Ducting: Another phenomenon that can extend the range of VHF and UHF signals is atmospheric ducting. This occurs when radio waves are trapped between layers of the atmosphere, such as between the surface and a temperature inversion layer, allowing them to travel much farther than usual.
• Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, and high humidity can affect signal propagation. Rain can absorb and scatter radio waves, particularly at higher frequencies, reducing the effective range and signal clarity.

Practical Considerations:

1. Antenna Placement: Positioning antennas as high as possible and clear of obstructions can help mitigate the effects of physical obstacles. Rooftops, towers, and masts are ideal locations.
2. Antenna Type: Directional antennas, like Yagi antennas, can help focus the signal in a specific direction, reducing the impact of reflections and multipath interference.
3. Regular Monitoring: Be aware of changing atmospheric conditions that might temporarily affect signal range and quality. Adjusting transmission power and antenna orientation can help compensate for these variations.
