8.4 CQ Calls

Making All-Stations (CQ) Calls: The “CQ” call is a general call to all amateur radio operators listening on a particular frequency, inviting them to respond and establish communication. It is an essential skill for any amateur radio operator, as it allows you to make contact with other operators who may be monitoring the same frequency. Here’s how to make an effective CQ call:

1. Choose a Clear Frequency: Before transmitting a CQ call, listen on the frequency to ensure it is not already in use. It is crucial to avoid causing interference to ongoing communications.
2. Announce Your Call: Clearly state your CQ call and your callsign. For example, you might say, “CQ, CQ, CQ, this is VK2XYZ calling CQ and standing by.” This format indicates that you are calling all stations and are ready to receive a response.
3. Repeat as Necessary: If you do not receive an immediate response, repeat your CQ call a few times, allowing sufficient breaks between calls to listen for replies.
4. Responding to a Reply: When another station responds, acknowledge them by repeating their callsign and providing a brief signal report. For instance, “VK3ABC, this is VK2XYZ, you are 5 by 9 (5/9) in Sydney.”
5. Exchanging Information: After establishing contact, exchange information such as names, locations, and signal reports. This exchange helps build rapport and provides useful feedback on transmission quality.
6. Changing to a Working Frequency (QSY): If the initial contact is made on a calling frequency, it is courteous to move to another frequency for a more extended conversation, allowing the calling frequency to remain open for other users. You might say, “VK3ABC, let’s QSY to 14.250 MHz,” and then both operators move to the new frequency.
