8.5 Transmitter Measurements

Measuring Output Power and VSWR: As an amateur radio operator, it is vital to regularly check and measure the performance of your transmitter to ensure it is operating efficiently and within legal limits. Two key measurements are output power and Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR).

Output Power Measurement: Output power is the amount of power the transmitter delivers to the antenna system. It is measured in watts (W). Ensuring your transmitter is outputting the correct power is crucial for effective communication and compliance with licence conditions.

1. Use a Power Meter: To measure output power, connect a power meter between the transmitter and the antenna or dummy load. Power meters are designed to provide an accurate reading of the transmitter’s power output.
2. Reading the Meter: Transmit a continuous carrier signal and read the power output on the meter. Ensure the reading does not exceed the maximum power limit specified for your licence class. For Foundation Licence holders, this is typically 10 watts.

Measuring VSWR: VSWR is a measure of how efficiently radio-frequency power is transmitted from the power source, through the transmission line, and into the antenna. A high VSWR indicates a poor match, leading to potential damage to the transmitter and inefficient transmission.

1. Use a VSWR Meter: To measure VSWR, connect a VSWR meter between the transmitter and the antenna. Some transceivers have built-in VSWR meters, which simplify the process.
2. Interpreting the Reading: Transmit a signal and observe the VSWR reading. An ideal VSWR is 1:1, indicating perfect matching. VSWR values up to 1.5:1 are generally acceptable. Higher values indicate reflected power, which can cause heating and potential damage.

Correcting Equipment Issues: Identifying and correcting issues like high VSWR or excessive modulation ensures your equipment operates effectively and within legal parameters.

1. High VSWR:
   • Check Connections: Ensure all coaxial connectors are properly tightened and free from corrosion.
   • Antenna Adjustment: Adjust the antenna length or position to achieve a better match. Use an antenna tuner if necessary.
   • Inspect Cables: Replace damaged or inferior quality cables that may contribute to high VSWR.
2. Excessive Modulation:
   • Adjust Microphone Gain: Excessive modulation often results from a high microphone gain setting. Adjust the gain to a level that prevents distortion.
   • Monitor Audio Quality: Listen to your transmitted audio using another receiver or ask for signal reports from other operators to ensure clarity and lack of distortion.
